일본디자인사연구회의 야스코 스가 교수님(PhD(RCA) FRSA)과 인터뷰를 진행했습니다.

Q. 일본의 디자인사 연구 현황은 어떻습니까? 그리고 당신이 속해 있는 일본디자인사연구회(Design History Workshop Japan)에 대해서도 알려주세요.
A. 디자인사 연구는 나처럼 스스로를 디자인 역사가라고 부르는 사람이 소수라는 점에서 일본에서는 주요 학문 분야가 아닙니다. 다른 대다수는 자신을 미술사가, 미디어 연구자, 경제사, 건축사라고 생각할 수도 있지만 디자인사 분야까지 포괄합니다. 이는 디자인 실무교육에 자율과목이 아닌 디자인사 수업을 병행하는 일본의 교육시스템을 강하게 반영합니다.
일본디자인사연구회는 스스로를 디자인 역사가라고 생각하는 사람들에 의해 2002년에 설립되었습니다. 우리는 이중 언어로 된 연례 저널을 갖는 것의 중요성을 강조하여 전 세계적으로 어필할 수 있는 그룹을 원했습니다(아직도 이를 계속하는 학술 그룹이나 학회가 많지 않습니다). 우리는 매년 국제 심포지엄을 개최하고 연구 발표회를 개최하여 디자인 역사 연구를 활성화하고 싶었습니다.
우리 회원은 약 80명 정도인데, 주로 연구원이고 일부 큐레이터와 실무자도 있습니다. 일본에는 디자인 역사를 전담하는 대학원 과정이 없기 때문에, 그리고 관련 학술 일자리도 많지 않기 때문에 회원 수가 쉽게 늘어나지 않습니다.
올해부터는 기존 활동에 더해 새로운 활동을 선보일 예정입니다. 첫째, 현장 조사를 하는 날 오후에는 도쿄 지역의 디자인사적으로 흥미로운 장소를 방문하게 됩니다. 둘째, 디자인사 논의를 활성화하고 학계를 넓히기 위해 겨울에 한일 공동 연구의 날을 개최하기를 희망합니다.
Q. 주요 연구 분야는 무엇이며, 현재 관심 있는 연구 분야는 무엇입니까?
A. 지금 나는 아가사 크리스티(Agatha Christie)와 현대 디자인에 관한 책을 쓰고 있습니다. 그녀는 현대 사진을 공부하기 위해 레이만(Reimann) 학교에 다니고 현대 건축가가 지은 론 로드 플랫(Lawn Load Flat)에서 생활하는 등 흥미로운 경험을 가진 매우 디자인에 민감한 여성이었습니다. 재미 반, 학문 반의 책입니다! 그리고 나는 전후 미술치료사가 된 디아스포라 섬유 디자이너 엘리자베스 토말린(Elizabeth Tomalin)에 주목하고 있습니다. 또 다른 주제는 도쿄에 있는 콘란숍(The Conran Shop Tokyo)의 역사입니다!
Q. 한국디자인사학회나 한국디자인사 연구에 대해 제안하고 싶으신 게 있으시면 말씀해 주세요.
A. 내 생각엔 한국이 일본보다 훨씬 잘 조직된 것 같아요! 우리는 한국디자인사학회로부터 배우기를 바랍니다. 앞으로 출판 프로젝트 등에서 정보와 아이디어를 교환하고, 기본적으로 서로 더욱 적극적으로 협업할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Q. What is the current state of design history research in Japan? Also, please tell us about the Design History Workshop Japan to which you belong.
A. Design history research is not a major academic field in Japan in that there is only a small number of people who would call themselves a design historian like myself. Other majority may consider themselves as art historians, media studies researchers, economic historians, or architectural historians, but they stretch to cover the field of design history. This strongly reflects the Japanese education system in which a design history class, not an autonomous course, is attached to the design practice education.
Design History Workshop Japan was established in 2002, by those who consider themselves as design historians in the first place. We wanted a group that would appeal globally by emphasising the importance of having a bilingual annual journal (still there aren't many academic groups or societies that continue to do that). We wanted to envigour the design history research by holding an annual international symposium and a few research presentation days.
We have around 80 members, mainly researchers, and some curators and practitioners. As there is no postgraduate course dedicated to design history in Japan (and this means there aren't many academic jobs either), the number of memberships does not grow easily.
From this year we will have some new activities in addition to the previous one. First, a fieldwork afternoon on which day we will visit a design-historically interesting place in the Tokyo area. Second, we also hope to organize a Korean-Japanese joint study day sometime in winter to stimulate design history debates and to widen the academic community.
Q. What is your main research about, and what are some of your current research interests?
A. Right now I am writing up a book on Agatha Christie and modern design - she was a very design-conscious woman with interesting experiences like attending the Reimann School to study modern photography and living in the Lawn Load Flat built by a modernist architect. It is a half fun, half academic book! Also I am focusing on Elizabeth Tomalin, a diaspora textile designer who became an art therapist in the post-war period. Another topic is the history of The Conran Shop Tokyo!
Q. If you have any suggestions for the Design History Society of Korea or the study of Korean design history, please tell us.
A. I think you are much better organized than us! We hope to learn from your group. We hope that we can exchange information and ideas, and basically collaborate with each other more actively from now on, on a publication project etc.
