요약

The magazine “Deep Water” was one of Korea's leading cultural magazines, which was launched in November 1984. The publishers were in full swing, with Kim Hyung-yoon and Seol Ho-jeong as editors, and the first generation Korean art director Lee Sang-cheol and photographer Kang Un-gu were introduced as the first members in charge of art (design) and photography, respectively. “Deep Well Water” focuses on “family” and “female” and deals with various issues and phenomena surrounding women in depth. The magazine, which was excellent in form, is evaluated as one of Korea's representative designs in the 1980s. In particular, the cover was often understood as a representation of the subjective female image by the appearance of ordinary women in the 1980s. Beyond his analysis of magazine design, the researcher found several interesting things by looking at the various articles in the magazine. One of them was the cover description of hundreds of critical women-related articles and the characters on the cover. In the latter case, the stories of Korean women in their 20s and 30s living in the 1980s were compressed. This thesis examines the feminist implications of the cover photo in which ordinary women appear through the linkage with the cover description. In order to interpret the cover photo, it was necessary to penetrate various texts that could understand women in the 1980s. Women-related articles in magazines, women's reading culture and women's movement in the 1980s were reviewed. As a result, two evaluations were possible for the cover of “Deep Well Water”. It is an evaluation as another patriarchal gaze that converges with “marriage–housewife–childcare” along with the “subjective woman image”. The latter is a fresh position in the evaluation of the existing “subjective woman image”. However, considering the status of women and women's movements in the 1980s, the cover photo was a very complex symbol to be organized smoothly and neatly. Rather, the conclusion was forced to ask another question. The cover photo of “Deep Well Water” is a question, “Isn't it the best visualization that a magazine that had a problem with gender differences at the time was able to get through the cover?”
